New year, new me

By Nick Thomas

I know that we’ve been in school for a while (three weeks? I don’t really know), but I have recently decided to adopt the phrase “new year, new me.”

It’s really corny, and it makes for the perfect Instagram caption, but for some reason I love the phrase. Corny phrases aside, I think I’m really just a fan of fresh starts.

New school years are nice because they allow you to really fulfill those resolutions you made back in January. You can allow your amazing summer internship, or boring, cabin fever-induced home visit, to reflect on who you are as you come into the semester.

Whether or not your summer was stellar sort of becomes irrelevant, and you get to be back together with all of your pals and reminisce on old inside jokes or relationship blunders. There really is no better feeling than the start of a new semester.

The reason behind my adoption of the whole “new year, new me” thing is because I would like to see change in my life this year. After 21 years on this earth, it has finally become apparent to me that in order for change to occur, I have to want it to.

You see, I do this thing where if I have a problem, I ask several people what I should do to fix the problem. I usually receive great advice, and then I ignore them and do whatever I was going to do anyway.

I think realistically if I want to accomplish anything, I need to not do that. I want this year to be a year of community, of people loving and helping each other, and for myself to allow people to want what’s best for me. Whether you want to believe it or not, your friends and family really want to help you, and it’s important that you let them.

And if I can offer any other advice, I encourage you readers to always allow people to become better, even if they may forget to wear deodorant sometimes.
