Reinventing rush

Rush is an important rite of passage at Oklahoma Christian University. Understanding this, I began developing what I feel would be the ideal rush process.

Why don’t we have a draft for rush, like the NFL? Instead of only having interviews, we can have a combined selection process. A combination that assesses skill in sports, Spring Sing, critical thinking and, of course, involvement. We could have a news conference with a representative (or representatives) from each club and have several rushees at one time answer various questions.

Money will be based off of how well the club did the previous year. For example, take all the points a club earned from Spring Sing, All-Sports and Homecoming, and that would be your capital to purchase rushees. Points would actually have importance. The club with the lowest score gets the first pick. Then the fun begins. In theory, this could boost club performance and member involvement, therefore making being involved in club a more thrilling experience.

When it is all said and done, we replace induction with the draft day. There will be 15 rounds to make your picks. With this part you could trade up in the draft or trade a rushee for picks and or currency. You could have your draft day hats, No. 1 pick club shirts and a handshake with the commissioner, but in our case the president of the club. You are probably wondering, what about those that are not drafted? Don’t worry, they would become unrestricted free agents with the ability to talk to all the clubs, and if the club likes them enough, sign with them.

I think it could happen. It would make rush better, considering that there would be no more rush week. This is just a wild idea I came up with and should be taken with a grain of salt.
