Teaching goes beyond the classroom

What does teaching mean to you? Why do you want to become a teacher?

When I began thinking about it my mind started racing about a thousand miles an hour, and I knew my answer. It’s because of the kids. Kids have no worries. They don’t have to think about deadlines, money or providing for others. They speak their mind and are passionate.

Kids learn in different ways. It becomes a challenge to find new ways to help children find the love of learning. And don’t forget the creativity. Every child is creative. There is nothing better than seeing children use their imagination and create something new all by themself. Then there’s the joy of exploring. Do you remember exploring and finding new information while you were in school? It’s something I’m sure we all remember and enjoyed.

I have never wanted to be anything other than a teacher. It is true, being an educator is in my blood. My mom, several aunts and several uncles were all teachers. It’s all I know. Once I was able to learn and be involved in the classroom more, I now understand what teaching is truly about. Teaching is about the children. Providing for their needs and having fun along the way. Kids have a purity that cannot be replicated.

We all had at least one teacher who stood out and who we will forever remember. I strive to be that teacher. They did something that other teachers couldn’t and that is why you remember them most. Teaching is more than giving worksheets or playing games. It’s building relationships. It’s listening to students when they do have bad days. It’s showing that you care and love them. It’s being a parent to 25 kids for eight hours a day. Some days will be good, others not so good. At the end of every day, I hope I can show Christ’s love to my kids in ways that they will never forget.
