The blessing of the Bible

Growing up in the Church of Christ, I can remember from a young age singing the song “Count Your Blessings.” For those of you who are unfamiliar with the tune, the song tells us to, “Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God has done.”

As I grow older, those blessings have become increasingly apparent. It is impossible to name every one of those blessings, but the list tends to incorporate an often-overlooked item.

I wonder if Christians undervalue the Bible. While I do not doubt that each and every Christian has some level of gratefulness for the holy book, I challenge you to imagine what Christianity would be like if we did not have a rudder such as this.

Imagine your walk with God without his guidance. Try to envision Christianity without goals, examples, role models or history.

Picture your struggles without the inspiration that comes from Paul; explain your existence without the use of Genesis. Imagine praise without the Psalms of David. Describe your hope without the New Testament.

I wonder if modern Christians lose themselves in the shuffle to find the next great book on faith, when the greatest examples ever told are right in front of them. Do not get me wrong, I applaud the pursuit of a deeper understanding of what it means to be a Christian, but I am curious if we find ourselves hanging onto the every word of Francis Chan instead of Jesus the Christ.

One of the greatest assets we as Christians have in our walk with God is the sword of the Spirit, and we would do well to wield it. For the word of God is alive and active, and in counting our blessings, might we list that at the top?
