The craft of laziness

There is no peak in sight that mankind can’t climb. My brother beat the world record for running across America. He never ran in high school nor was he ever known for being a good runner. He just decided he wanted to run across America to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of our grandfather. So he trained, made the run and beat the world record.

Whether or not you accomplish great things all comes down to your mindset. Society has led us to a terrible mindset; it is accepted and socially expected for college students to be lazy.

It is common for people to say, “I’m just feeling lazy right now” and that be a valid excuse for not doing something they need to. This is a dumb way to live. We should be doing things beneficial for mankind instead of sitting on our backs watching Netflix 24/7.

We get in this mindset of “I don’t have homework, so I can just waste the rest of my time.” Or “I have homework, but let me go on Facebook instead.” STOP. This is a terrible way to live – and I’m preaching at myself as well as everyone else.

The Bible has numerous verses about laziness. One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 6:6 which says, “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!”

God is telling us, through the author, to be like an ant. It’s this super tiny insect and he’s saying, “Yes, you should be like that.”

I can see why; ants are pretty amazing creatures. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse, according to lingolex.com. Ants can also lift 20 times their own body weight. If I could lift 20 times my weight like an ant, I would be able to lift 26 hundred pounds. And on top of their strength, basically all ants do is work.

Back before Internet, television and cars, people worked a bit like that. What happened to the Laura Ingalls who helped their dad on the farm from sunrise to sunset? What happened to the time when sugar was a treat and not an every meal occurrence? Why do we spoil ourselves with junk food, and stay up to ungodly hours?

Now while college students are busy, busyness does not always equal diligence. You can go to work, do all your homework and even do Spring Sing and still be a lazy person. It all has to do with your mindset. Are you in the mind to do your best or just get by? Do you do the bare minimum at work and call it good? Do you meet the word count for an essay and say, “I’ve worked hard,” so forget about editing and actually making it a decent piece of work?

Try to benefit the most people with your actions and think about the long term. Maybe go volunteer, workout or just start doing your best at your job instead of just scraping by. I look around sometimes and wonder where humanity got off. We sit glued to screens 24/7, me included. I can’t help but think this is not what Christ had in mind for us.

We should be using the gifts God has given us (not the gifts of lounging, eating and sleeping) and do something for this world. If we see a problem in the world, we should be the hands and feet of Jesus.

I feel like college puts us too much into a mindset of lists. If you get your list of homework, school or whatnot done and then you can just sit back, relax and do nothing to benefit the world, while we should really live the best we can so to benefit mankind and portray Christianity in a positive light.

Just like my brother did, we can transcend the state that we are in. We can work hard, be fitter and be more beneficial to humanity. So go do something. Create, work, live!
