The importance of school spirit

After last Wednesday’s chapel announcement from Snoop-Dan, also known as Head Coach Dan Hays, I went to the doubleheader the next day. It made me realize how important it is to show school spirit and to be involved in school activities.

The more we as students participate and show appreciation for things like sports, drama and music, the more the school will see them as something worthwhile to invest in. If we don’t go to games just because our team is not doing well, or we never go to plays because we’re tired — that is going to reflect on the whole of campus. Part of the reason some programs get cut is because a lack of interest in them.

So if there is something you are passionate about, or don’t want to lose from this school, get involved! If you like sports, support our sports teams. If you like music, support our music department.

By becoming involved you not only enrich the school, you enrich your own life. You can get out of the dorm, hang with some friends and maybe even try something you’ve never done before. I didn’t enjoy watching any sports until I came to Oklahoma Christian University, but the more I watch our basketball teams and baseball teams compete, the more I love it.

That is a big reason I think everyone should come to games at least once. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy it, getting out and experiencing things helps you better relate to all people.

Plus, you get to enjoy free live entertainment – none of this digital garbage – and build relationships with your fellow students. Getting involved in campus activities, whether it is Spring Sing, baseball games or Jazz band concerts, helps you build relationships with people you might not have met.

Not only that, being involved in many activities can help you in your professional life. These are things to put on your resume. Maybe you want to become involved in missions, this is a great time to do that!

Also, scholarships are sometimes available when you are involved in specific things. Your activities can leverage your professional life and help build more professional connections. Professors will recognize you, staff will be more likely to recognize you and you will be more likely to build relationships with people writing up your letters of recommendation. All this can help you get the job you want.

Finally, you can show support of your friends and students. Chances are, in a school this size, you will probably know someone on the track team, or someone in band. So why not show your support for them?
