The men’s soccer team continued its streak with a 4-0 shutout against Oklahoma Baptist University in the rivals’ first game in four years.
Junior Cody Cook said the win was extra satisfying because of the challenge of being shorthanded with injuries.
“It feels really good to get the shutout tonight,” Cook said after the game. “Especially with the limited amount of players we have.”
Cook scored the first of the Eagles’ four goals unassisted in the ninth minute, and made the assist to Cody McLemore in the 71st minute for Oklahoma Christian University’s second goal. Ante Susic replicated Cook’s offensive generation by assisting Sergio Flores in the 77th minute and scoring a goal of his own unassisted in the 85th minute.
Despite fatigue from weekend games, Cook said the team performed excellently.
“I thought we worked and played well with tired legs tonight,” Cook said on Monday. “We need to keep working hard throughout the season in order to get the results we want.”
OBU outshot Oklahoma Christian 20-12, but for the second consecutive game, goalkeeper Evan Helker recorded a shutout against a tenacious offense. He ended the game with six saves.
According to Cook, the Eagles continue to rise up to the level of competition they face.
“No matter the adversity we are faced with, we somehow keep finding a way to win and we showed that on Saturday as well as tonight,” Cook said.
Oklahoma Christian hosts Texas A&M International University on Friday at 4 p.m.
