The Lady Eagles struggled on the soccer field despite a 1-0 victory against the University of Texas-Permian Basin.
According to Women’s Soccer Head Coach Randall Robison, the game didn’t qualify as “bad” but the girls had more potential than what they showed Thursday night.
“The first 20 minutes I thought we were really good but we struggled with their wide play — it looked like our legs were heavy,” Robison said. “It wasn’t the level, the intensity or the work rate we had last week.”
Rubi Villegas Aguilar scored the game’s only goal in the 15th minute, assisted by Madeline Roseke.
Robison said while the team deserved the goal, they didn’t play smart and used possession of the ball poorly. He also said the field was bumpy, and the Lady Eagles were accustomed to their easily playable home turf.
“It was one of those games where we weren’t playing our best soccer,” Robison said. “I don’t know if it’s the travel, the location or the fans — we just didn’t look on tonight as much as we have recently.”
Oklahoma Christian University attempted six shots against Texas-Permian Basin — compared to the Falcons’ 13 shots. Robison said the Falcons’ shots were not dangerous, calling on Carina Schanz for six saves.
Overall, the night was considered a success due to the victory, and Robison credits it entirely to the team.
“Good teams find a way to win even when they’re not playing well – and the girls did that tonight,” Robison said.
The Lady Eagles face Lubbock Christian University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
