The Eagles’ soccer team continues to ride on a win streak with a 3-1 victory against Sterling College after falling behind early on Saturday.

According to sophomore Nijee Cooper, the team approached the game with only one goal in mind.

“We were focused on continuing our winning streak,” Cooper said. “Winning these games is a team effort and we have all worked hard and challenged ourselves to be better.”

Sterling burst out of the gates aggressively Saturday afternoon, scoring in under 20 seconds of the opening buzzer. The Warriors held a 1-0 lead for most of the first half, until Brandon Little Axe scored from 15 yards out off an assist from Ante Susic. The two teams held a 1-1 tie going in to the half.

The injury of the energetic Anthony Buchanan in September sparked a new fire in the team, Cooper said.

“After Anthony’s injury, we decided to show resilience as a team and work harder than ever before,” Cooper said.

Oklahoma Christian University displayed this resilience in the second half, as it slowly powered past Sterling. Clay Collier scored in the 72nd minute from an assist by Cesar Zepeda, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Cooper scored in the 87th minute off an assist from Susic, his second of the game, to seal the Warriors’ fate at 3-1.

Cooper said the Eagles are focused on emphasizing their team, and have confidence the wins will keep coming.

“We play with heart and hope to continue winning,” Cooper said. “And as my good friend and fellow player Clay Collier says, ‘Play for the name on the front of the jersey and they will remember the name on the back.’”

Oklahoma Christian looks to add its fifth consecutive win when it hosts St. Edward’s University Thursday at 5 p.m.
