Freshman’s goals push Lady Eagles past SNU

The Lady Eagles soccer team recorded their first victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout performance against Southern Nazarene University.

Freshman Rubi Villegas Aguilar led the team by scoring both goals for Oklahoma Christian University. Women’s Soccer Head Coach Randall Robison said he approved of her effort with the help of a teammate.

“[Rubi] did a great job getting open and she really did that on both goals,” Robison said. “I know Karolina assisted the first one from goalkeeper position, which doesn’t always happen, but she ran the ball really well.”

The game remained scoreless until Aguilar found the net in the 70th minute and again in the 80th minute. With an assist by fellow freshman Karolina Srutkova, Aguilar sealed the Storm’s fate.

While Oklahoma Christian managed to score within its 12 shots, as opposed to SNU’s 19, the Lady Eagles also recorded eight fouls – twice as many as their competition.

Goalkeeper Carina Schanz recorded five saves during the game.

Robison said the team rallied together and caused SNU to revise its offensive game plans.

“The girls competed everywhere on the field,” Robison said. “Our backs were very sound and our wings and frontrunners were dangerous all game, so Southern Nazarene had to defend them for the whole game. It really was a team effort.”

Oklahoma Christian students journeyed to Bethany, Oklahoma to encourage the Lady Eagles in their battle with the Storm, and Robison said they played a significant role at the game.

“Our fans were the loudest ones here, hands down,” Robison said. “I have no doubt that the fans helped the girls play the way that they did tonight so I’m definitely looking forward to even more coming on Thursday.”

The Lady Eagles host Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
