Despite a promising start, the Lady Eagles fell 3-0 to St. Edward’s University on Thursday.
Senior Areli Bermudez Delgado said the home game was challenging before it even started, but Women’s Soccer Head Coach Randall Robison said he wasn’t disappointed with the loss.
“He just wanted us to battle and try our best, so he said he was proud of us for the effort,” Delgado said. “We knew coming into the game it was going to be a tough game because they’re a really good team — number one in our conference actually.”
The Hilltoppers started the competition early by scoring their first goal at the 53-second mark.
According to Delgado, Oklahoma Christian University took the wake up call and rallied together to try and make a statement.
“I think we worked together well,” Delgado said. “We pressured them, we tried to force them to make mistakes, lose the ball. So I think as a team we were organized and that was a win for us.”
The Hilltoppers outshot the Lady Eagles 17-6, and goalkeeper Carina Schanz recorded seven saves during the onslaught.
Hilltopper Jennifer Boudreau scored her team’s second goal in the 76th minute, followed by teammate Morgan Palmer scoring in the 81st minute to close out the game 3-0 in St. Edward’s favor.
Delgado said the Lady Eagles’ upcoming game would be similar to the game against St. Edward’s.
“The next game is against DBU, which is another top-ranked team in our conference, so it’s going to be very interesting and we’re very excited for them,” Delgado said.
Oklahoma Christian hosts Dallas Baptist University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
