The Lady Eagles soccer team struggled to hold its ground against Lubbock Christian University, resulting in a 5-1 loss on Saturday.
Women’s Soccer Head Coach Randall Robison said he wanted the team’s effort to be equivalent to the performance against Dallas Baptist University the previous week.
“We hoped we could come out with that intensity but we were slow to react to stuff and let them control everything in the game,” Robison said. “For the 90 minutes, we didn’t have the intensity or quality that we needed.”
The team started the game in the right direction when Rubi Villegas Aguilar drove through the Chaparrals’ defense and scored a shot from eight yards out in the 23rd minute.
But from then on, LCU was the leader of the field.
The Chaparrals recorded 17 shots to the Eagles’ four and scored their first three goals within a 13-minute period. The final two goals passed goalkeeper Carina Schanz in the 77th and 88th minutes.
Schanz completed three saves compared to LCU goalkeeper Leslie Castellano’s single save during the game.
Robison said a day of driving could be a factor for the loss of intensity.
“I think traveling is part of it, but [the team] knew what they signed up for,” Robison said. “We knew what we would be traveling into this weekend, if that was a problem we need to prepare better – we need to learn a lesson.”
The team aims to prepare and learn before the school’s upcoming fall break when it faces Texas A&M International University and St. Mary’s University.
“Typically our defense plays very, very well and today is an exception of that,” Robison said. “So if we can ride that ship and get back to playing good defensive soccer in the back, we’ll have a chance to win those two games.”
The Lady Eagles will play against Texas A&M International on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
