The men’s soccer team shut out Central Christian College 3-0 on Thursday as Oklahoma Christian University penciled in its first home win as a complete NCAA Division II member.

Sophomore Cody McLemore said he has confidence in the season if the team can avoid injury.

“It is all God’s hands,” McLemore said. “We have many injured players and only had two field subs [on Thursday]. So if we can get healthy we have potential to do well.”

The Eagles earned both their goals in the first half from penalty kicks. Anthony Buchanan was the first to score in the 26th minute, followed by Ante Susic in the 39th minute.

Buchanan’s goal was his third over three consecutive games. He collided with a player from Central Christian shortly after the half, and both players left the game. McLemore said Buchanan’s effort has not gone unnoticed, and the team holds him in high regard.

“[Thursday] was a very emotional game for us,” McLemore said. “Anthony has worked very hard for the team and is well-respected by the team. To see him go down like that really put the team through a lot. Despite that hardship, we were able to endure and do what was needed in the game to pull off the win.”

Central Christian nearly matched Oklahoma Christian’s 17 shot attempts with 16 of its own, but failed to convert on any. Eagle goalkeeper Evan Helker recorded four saves in the game.

Cody McLemore sealed the game with Oklahoma Christian’s third goal of the night in the 89th minute.

“It was a good ball from Stephen Tower,” McLemore said. “From there it was just putting it far post.”

The Eagles’ Thursday win gives them a 2-1 record so far this season. They host Mid-America Christian University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
