Northeastern State hands women’s soccer first loss

The Lady Eagles soccer team recorded their first loss of the season at Northeastern State University in a 4-0 shutout Sunday.

Junior Samantha Kuneman said despite the hard loss, she is optimistic about the season ahead.

“I believe that our team this season will change things,” Kuneman said. “We have the talent and I know we have the heart. We as a team just need to believe that and stop worrying about what will happen if we fail.”

Goalkeeper Carina Schanz recorded 10 saves against the Riverhawks. But Northeastern State’s persistence at the net earned it four goals spread throughout the game, while on the other side of the field the Lady Eagle offense struggled to create opportunities. Oklahoma Christian managed only four shot attempts against Northeastern State’s 21.

As the women host Hillsdale Baptist University on Sept. 12 for their first home game, Kuneman said fan attendance makes a huge difference.

“I’m thankful for the support that we have at our games,” Kuneman said. “It really helps us. It assures us that we have people that still believe and have hope in us.”

Saturday’s games against Hillsdale Baptist begins at 6 p.m.
