Lady Eagles unify to shut down Texas Wesleyan

In a 2-0 shutout performance against Texas Wesleyan University, the Lady Eagles soccer team recorded its second win of the season – the result of a more in-sync squad, according to sophomore Shaye Hatchette.

“We’re starting to play more unified,” Hatchette said. “It helped that the home crowd had us pumped up to play our best.”

Senior Sam Kuneman also stressed the impact that cohesiveness had on the team’s success.

“We just played as unit,” Kuneman said. “We pressured the ball really well and stayed on them the whole game.”

The Rams and the Lady Eagles remained locked in what appeared to be a stalemate for the first half, with neither team capitalizing on shot opportunities.

Areli Bermudez broke the silence in the 55th minute with 10-yard shot off an assist from Darrian Palacios.

According to Kuneman, unselfish offense proved key for Oklahoma Christian University.

“We passed the ball more and when the other team messed up we were right on their backs,” Kuneman said.

The ball movement led to another goal in the 83rd minute, when Sydni Wiles connected with Hatchette to give the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Hatchette said Oklahoma Christian’s solid defense allowed the offense to flourish.

“Our defense and goalie held off their offensive strikes,” Hatchette said. “We used our speed, took advantage of their mistakes and scored off those opportunities.”

Lady Eagle goalkeeper Carina Schanz recorded four saves against the Rams. Oklahoma Christian outshot Texas Wesleyan 17-11.

The women’s soccer team hosts McKendree University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
