The Lady Eagles conquered Rogers State University on the soccer field with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

Junior Courtney Nixon said the team struggled in the beginning of the game as the first half ended scoreless, but Areli Bermudez Delgado stepped up to motivate her teammates.

“I think we had great opportunities to score but couldn’t finish the first half,” Nixon said. “Then after Areli’s goal went in it really pumped us up and we fought for the ball more.”

Delgado scored in the 48th minute with a header off Madeline Roseke’s corner kick.

Shortly after, Roseke assisted in another goal, this time Rubi Villegas Aguilar scored it in the 57th minute of the game.

Nixon credited the goals to teamwork and a mutual focus on overcoming the Hillcats.

“I think we controlled the play up the field well and created great runs to get ourselves free from Rogers’ defense,” Nixon said.

Oklahoma Christian University proved offensively aggressive with 22 shots and forced Hillcat goalkeeper Tayler Stover to work for nine saves.

The Lady Eagles held their dominance to the end, although Rogers State had the last say on the field as Kimberlin Bennett scored a goal in 84th minute. Goalkeeper Carina Schanz recorded six saves.

One game remains in the season – a home game against Newman University Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Nixon said the game would have a deeper meaning than the conclusion of the season because it is also Senior Night.

“It’s definitely going to be an emotional game for everyone, especially our seniors,” Nixon said. “We need to push through it and make it our best game of the season. I want us to walk off smiling and know that we left everything we had on the field.”
