There have been many renovations on the Oklahoma Christian University campus this year including the new soccer locker rooms.
David Scott, the head men’s soccer coach, discussed the funds behind this renovation.
“In regard to the donor, at this time, [they have] asked to remain anonymous,” Scott said. “The facility is being funded through this anchor donation as well as donations from several other men’s and women’s soccer alumni.”
Scott believes this renovation could be a big step in recruitment and making the players feel more comfortable before practice and games.
“It’s something that we’ve needed for the entirety of the program,” Scott said. “To have a home base and a place for players to call their own, a transition point from being a student to coming to the field and get your mind in the right place.”
Scott spoke on the need for renovation in comparison with other schools.
“We were slowly falling behind with a lot of things happening at other schools improving their facilities,” Scott said. “This will help us tremendously.”
Former player Morgan Boling said the Oklahoma Christian men’s and women’s soccer teams were asked to help fundraise money for the new locker rooms. Fundraising included selling gift cards and asking for small donations.
The lead donation came from a former men’s soccer player who prefers to remain anonymous. Others donors were Oklahoma Christian alumni. The project will cost around $600,000.
Current soccer player Ana Ferreira spoke on the benefits of having locker rooms.
“I believe it’s important to have a locker room that the players really enjoy,” Ferreira said. “It is the place we all concentrate before a game to get our minds right. It will be cool to have that walk to the field from the locker rooms with the new building and everything.”
Meagan Anderson, the women’s head coach, also spoke about the excitement of having alumni give to current students.
“This is a project which OC soccer has been dreaming about for a long time,” Anderson said. “We are very excited and thrilled to have alumni invest into our student-athletes. We’ve longed for a place of our own and to have something right next to our field will be huge for our current and future players”.
Oklahoma Christian first opened what is currently known as the Eagle Soccer Field back in 1986. Scott said this project has been in fruition for many years. With the help of generous donors and alumni, renovations are finally possible.
