Intramural Athletes of the Week: Jan. 13-19

Intramural Female Athlete of the Week

Name: Carley Compton

Club: Gamma Rho

Year: Sophomore

Hometown: Tualatin, OR

Major: Psychology

Team: C1

Stats:

Tuesday, Jan. 15: Gamma Rho C1 defeated the Freshman C1 team 30-2, in both teams’ first game of the season. While playing, a freshman player head-butted Compton in the face and broke her nose.

Q: Why did you want to play basketball intramurals?

A: “I love being with my Gamma sisters and acting crazy. I love that you are never too bad to be on C team; you just come out, play your best and have a good time!”

Q: What were your thoughts after the injury?

A: “I had been hit on the nose in basketball games in my past, so I knew it was going to bleed. Right after the hit, I immediately grabbed to pinch it to stop from bleeding and accidentally popped it back into place. At that point, I knew it was broken, and I was going to the ER.”

Intramural Male Athlete of the Week

Name: James Leeper

Club: Kappa Sigma Tau

Year: Senior

Hometown: Centennial, CO

Major: Broadcast Journalism

Team: B

Stats:

Tuesday, Jan. 15: Kappa Sigma Tau B team lost to The Flock, a B team composed of members of the men’s varsity soccer team. Leeper grabbed a couple of rebounds before suffering a dislocated shoulder, which ended his intramural career. Leeper said he heard five pops before experiencing a large amount of pain.

Q: What is your favorite memory from playing intramurals with your club?

A: “My favorite memory from playing intramurals is when Kappa A team won the football championship last fall. One of our star players on the team was reading the scoreboard wrong the entire game and thought we had actually lost the game. He thought we were just celebrating to mess with Chi [Lambda Phi] and was just going with it. It took about three hours for him to realize we had actually won.”

Q: What were your thoughts after the injury?

A: “I was just sad I wasn’t going to be able to finish the basketball season and likely play anything else for the rest of the semester.”
