2019 Homecoming executive director announced

Oklahoma Christian University’s Homecoming weekend allows alumni the opportunity to return to campus, reconnect with former peers and meet current students and faculty members. This fall, Austin Johnson, a senior gaming and animation major from Lee’s Summit, MO, will oversee the event as the 2019 Homecoming executive director.

On campus, Johnson is the lab manager for the gaming and animation program and an active member of the Chi Lambda Phi men’s social service club. According to Johnson, he has been involved in both Spring Sing and intramurals.

Q. Why did you decide to attend Oklahoma Christian?

“I came to OC because of my degree. It is one of the top gaming programs in the nation. Additionally, I enjoy the home-like feel it has. It is a very similar size to my high school, and Edmond feels a lot like my own town.”

Q. How have you participated in Homecoming in the past?

“Last year, I was on the executive Homecoming board, and the year before I helped build and paint the float for our club.”

Q. What have been some of your favorite memories from Homecoming?

“My favorite memories have been at float builds. The guys I am in club with are good at goofing off while still being able to get the work done that we need. It was just a blast to be at float build, and I’ve gone to every single one that I can. However, my favorite part of Homecoming is the parade. It’s fun to see everyone working together toward a common goal, and it’s great to see how many people come and enjoy it.”

Q. Why did you decide to apply to be next year’s executive Homecoming director?

“I was on the executive board last year and got to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that went into the week. Mandolin [Skipworth] made a bunch of really good changes last year that have pushed Homecoming into a more enjoyable event for students, faculty and alumni alike. I would like to continue making those changes as well as continuing a few new things that were started last year. I am hopeful that this year will be another successful year, and I’m hoping some of my ideas will result in good changes for the future.”

Q. What do you think you bring to the table that will help put together a successful Homecoming?

“Since I was on the executive board last year, I have a good knowledge foundation to build on this year. There will be a lot to learn as the director, but I saw what it takes to have a successful Homecoming week. I enjoy solving problems, which is half the battle when it comes to Homecoming. I also enjoy planning events. It’s something that I have done in my previous jobs and am excited to be able to use that knowledge again.”

Q. How can students on campus get involved with homecoming?

“Students who are involved with social service clubs on campus will have those opportunities just like in the past. Last year, there was a big push to get more students involved, and it’s something I would like to continue. The clubs and organizations that are on campus will be encouraged to enter the banner competition. Last year, two of those clubs were the ROTC and the Flight Club. There will also be a schedule of events for the whole week of Homecoming that any student can come to and participate in.”

Q. Why should students, faculty and alumni get excited for Homecoming?

“Homecoming is a time to come together for everyone in the OC world. It brings together alumni, students and family. There are lots of people you would have never have the chance to meet without Homecoming. It’s a great time to learn about OC’s history from people who were here years ago. I am so excited for what this year’s Homecoming is already shaping up to be.”
