Early bird gets the worm at annual OCWA garage sale

Exhibiting and selling hundreds of vintage furniture, clothing and house décor items, the Oklahoma Christian Women’s Association host their annual garage sale fundraiser this weekend.

Lauren Tallon is the OCWA Coordinator and also works in the Oklahoma Christian University Alumni office.

“We [the OCWA] are an organization of mostly alumni women who have graduated,” Tallon said. “We raise funds for the university. We do fundraisers throughout the year and all that money goes to fund various products on campus.”

Tallon graduated from Oklahoma Christian in 2010 and is currently involved with recruiting other alumni to volunteer for the annual garage sale.

“We have four different chapters, so I am the liaison between the chapters and the university,” Tallon said. “This is our biggest fundraiser for the Oklahoma City chapter. People from all over donate items, so it’s 100 percent profit for us.”

Prior to Tallon taking the coordinator position, Christine Merideth held the role for 10 years.

“I am the president of the board,” Merideth said. “I have been an active member ever since I graduated college, a long time ago.”

Merideth said she will be one of the many women volunteering their time to work this fundraiser.

“There are people who come on Thursday to help with set up that won’t come Friday or Saturday,” Merideth said. “So I would say we probably have around 20 to 25 ladies.”

Both Tallon and Meredith both said this fundraiser is the biggest event of the year for OCWA.

OCWA also holds other small fundraisers throughout the school year that add profit including concession stands at all of the home basketball games, care packages and Valentine’s Day gifts.

Among the students showing interest in this event, sophomore Savannah McMillon said she is excited about this upcoming event.

“I can’t wait to go to the OCWA garage sale this weekend,” McMillon said. “I love the fact that all the money comes back to the school and I love garage sales.”

The event will be held at The Summit at Memorial Road Church of Christ on Friday October 7th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8th from 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.
