Quick Questions with Kayla Gomez

The Talon staff sat down with Kayla Gomez, one of Oklahoma Christian University’s Spring Sing hosts, to discuss all things Spring Sing.

Q. Why did you want to be a Spring Sing host?

“I actually wasn’t intending on trying out until one of my friends convinced me to do so.”

Q. What was the process like to become a host this year?

“So the first thing we had to do was prepare for auditions last November. We chose one song and the execs chose another. After that, we were called back to audition again with a group of 16 people where we had to sing with each other in order to see if our voices meshed well together. Later that night, I found out that this really awesome opportunity was given to me and seven other amazing people.”

Q. What led you to want to be involved in Spring Sing in the first place?

“I remember my senior year in high school when I went to my first Spring Sing show and seeing clubs and hosts work so hard to be a part of this. I was in awe at the commitment and talent of all the students. I just knew that I wanted to be a part of it all.”

Q. What has been your favorite thing so far about being a host?

“One of my favorite parts about this has been getting to know all of the other hosts better. I’m working with some of the most talented people I have ever met, and I couldn’t be more thankful.”

Q. How did it feel to watch your sisters’ performance on Club Night while you were a host?

“It was definitely a ‘proud mom’ moment for me. They killed it, and their vocals—always on point.”

Q. What songs will you be performing, and which are you most excited for?

“The group performances are “Seasons of Love,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and a mashup of “This Will Be” and “My Girl.” I’m singing “I Told You So” with Jarrett Carter. I’m really excited for our duet. It’s a very intense and emotional song and Jarrett is so talented—it’s a super cool experience.”

Q. How long have you been a singer?

“I’ve never taken lessons or have been in choir, but I played the violin for about 10 years, so it’s a little easier to pick up on when it comes to music.”

Q. What sets the hosts and performances apart this year?

“We all truly get along with each other and have a great time performing together. It feels natural, and I think the crowd would love authenticity.”

Q. Why would you encourage someone to apply to be a Spring Sing host next year?

“I would encourage everyone to apply because it really has been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It’s fun, exciting and nerve-wracking, but so rewarding. Get out of your comfort zone and do something different. That’s what I did.”

Q. Why would you encourage students, faculty, alumni and friends of Oklahoma Christian to attend Spring Sing this year?

“I encourage everyone to attend not only because this is one of OC’s finest traditions, but also because the clubs and directors overseeing this production worked so hard to make it special, fun and entertaining for everyone to watch.”
