- Gunman kills nine at Oregon community college (Reuters)
In an execution-style killing of at least nine people, a gunman attacked a classroom at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon on Thursday. The gunman also wounded seven people and was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. This tragedy marks the 294th and deadliest mass shooting this year in the United States.

Hurricane Joaquin slammed central Bahamas on Friday morning and is expected to head north — avoiding a direct U.S. hit. A separate weather system could potentially lead to historic flooding in the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic states.
