Kaelin tops career-best, places 8th in Missouri

The Oklahoma Christian University cross country team ran in the Missouri Southern Stampede on Saturday. For the second consecutive race, senior Brennym Kaelin was the leader and top finisher for the Eagles.

Kaelin posted a time of 25:06.76 through the 8,000-meter course. This was good enough to place him eighth individually and also surpassed his previous career-best by 50 seconds.

Kaelin said he believes a few extra days of preparation helped his race performance. “The preparation for this meet really involved just getting in a week and a half of solid training coming off of the last meet,” Kaelin said. “We worked out hard the day before, and it was just about making sure we were fully recovered for race time on Saturday, and I believe we were.”

Kaelin said he was excited for the stage of this meet, he said it was a big meet for his team. “This meet has some importance to us as it’s our first real race opportunity this season and because most of the schools in our conference will be there,” Kaelin said. “It will give us a good idea of where we stand right now and what we need to improve on come November. I really just want our team to run smart and to be patient at this point and to just to get out and compete”

Fellow senior Bryant Kierns posted the Eagles’ second top-20 finisher, placing 20th with his time of 25:15.93. Sisay Gillock took 48th with a time of 25:44.71, followed shortly by Roberto Diaz, posting a 25:48.80, giving him a 52nd-place finish.

Oklahoma Christian finished behind two South Central Region rivals, Metro State from Colorado and Tarleton State from Texas. The score for the men’s team came to 196, placing it eighth among the 25-team field.

The Eagles will travel to Stillwater on Saturday for the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree.
