Nerd out: Multimedia open mic night

Last Thursday, Jan. 30 Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, opened the floor to students to “nerd out” at open mic night.

Sigma Tau Delta’s president, Rylee Schmidt, elaborated on the nerd out theme and why it was important to be inclusive to all the different forms of art.

“Every semester, we usually do an open mic night, but this year’s special because it’s a multimedia open mic night,” Schmidt said.

The crowd voted with applause for each performer and those with the loudest applause were rewarded with branded mugs and T-shirts as prizes.

Events like open mic night, as well as bake sales, help fund different trips the club takes throughout the year. Sigma Tau Delta’s secretary, Kate Whitmore, talked about their upcoming trip.

“A few of us are going to a conference for some essays we wrote, which is where we go present them to other students and professors across the country,” Whitmore said. “We’re going to be doing a few more events before spring break just to keep raising money for that. We do bake sales in the students center as well which helps a lot.”

Open mic night included vocals and musical numbers, sketches, comedy acts as well as poems and different readings. Sophomore English Writing major, Enoch Perkins, shared a poem at Open Mic Night that he wrote during his time spent at home.

“I wrote a poem about a day when I was sitting in the thunderstorm, feeling the presence of God,” Perkins said. “There had been a series of storms in my hometown, and I just felt like it was time to go sit out in the rain. It took me about twenty minutes to write.”

“Sitting watching storms of great. Blessings pour like rain across my face. Time stands still in the power of my God. Each strike of lightning clears my fog. Draw me nearer to the Lord on high. Who’s mighty power fuels each clouds cry. Blue flashes interrupt the bleak grey sky. Followed by a crash that makes the air shake. Leaving me with nothing left to contemplate. Except for the peace I feel during the storm of great”.
