Area campus ministries are organizing trips and service opportunities for Oklahoma Christian University students during fall break.

Edmond Church of Christ, Memorial Road Church of Christ and New Hope Church of Christ are each planning events during the four-day fall break next week.

“New Hope is currently organizing a stay-cation type of retreat,” Matthew Claybrook, college minister at the New Hope Church of Christ, said. “We know there are a lot of students with nowhere to go this year. So we are focusing on providing some fun stuff they can do in town, while building Christian relationships and growing spiritually.”

According to Claybrook, New Hope is working with Habitat for Humanity, Cross and Crown and United Way on specific volunteer opportunities.

“There will be events going on each day of fall break at the church building here in town as well,” Claybrook said. “If anyone cannot make it to the volunteer sites, they are more than welcome to attend our talks with Josh Nichols, coffee socials, group prayer sessions and movie nights.”

Similar to New Hope’s plans, Edmond Church of Christ is also exploring options for college students to serve and have fun during fall break through an experience called Mission Edmond.

According to Edmond Church of Christ’s college minister Evan Burkett, Mission Edmond plans to connect the students with the community while showing the community Christ.

This is the second year for Mission Edmond to take place. Last year, Edmond Church of Christ saw a handful of Oklahoma Christian students participate in the service projects with the community.

“I participated with Mission Edmond last year, and it was a really cool opportunity,” junior Haley Goodin said. “It felt like a mini-spring break mission trip. You don’t ever think of people in Edmond, Oklahoma being the ones who need help, so this was a very eye-opening experience for me, and I got to see my hometown in a different light.”

Mission Edmond lasts all day Thursday, Friday and half a day Saturday of fall break. The suggested contribution is $15, which covers a T-shirt, some meals and supplies. More information and registration are available on Edmond Church of Christ’s website.

“It’s a great opportunity, not only to serve our neighbors, but also to be a part of congregation life and get to know families in the church,” Burkett said. “I’m really excited for this year’s Mission Edmond, and I encourage as many students as possible to connect with us.”

Memorial Road is also offering a fall break trip to outside the state with its college ministry students. This year’s trip is already full, but College Minister Jay Mack said he is trying to rethink the trip for next year so more people can participate.

Fall break for Oklahoma Christian is Oct. 15-19.
