A lot of noise will be coming from Hardeman Auditorium on Sunday Oct. 6. The music department’s 18th annual Grand Concert will take place at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.
The concert features the OC Chamber Orchestra, the University Chorale, Chamber Singers, Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. Each group will present a short performance showcasing the pieces they work on during the year. Selections are varied from Handel to John Williams.
Over 150 Oklahoma Christian University students will be involved in the concert. As a special addition, drummer Mike Walker will play with the Jazz Ensemble.
“I played with Mike as a student in the UCO jazz band,” Professor of Music Heath Jones said. “He is one of OKC’s finest drummers and has been the drummer for OKC’s band Aranda and also plays drum set with the Oklahoma City jazz orchestra.”
Jones is known for bringing high-caliber musicians to Oklahoma Christian. In 2012, world-renowned Hammond organist Tony Monaco performed a concert and earlier this semester, international singer/songwriter Rick Price performed on campus.
“I chose to have Mike because he is a world-class musician and I want my students in the jazz band to perform with someone of his caliber,” Jones said.
