Introducing Eagle Film’s New Project: “The Seed”

Eagle Film will begin filming its latest project, “The Seed,” in late September. “The Seed” tells a story that will inspire students and carry on the legacy of the Eagle Film department long after its end.

“‘The Seed’ is a coming of age Christian film set with our two main characters who have grown up with very different backgrounds,” Charlie Luckett, the film’s producer, said. “Faith, who grew up in a sheltered, naive, Christian household, and comes to college to be slammed with an immediate change of culture.”

“Then there’s David, who has experienced the extreme harshness of life. He is a walking train wreck. We start our first act in this internal conflict of both of these two people,” Luckett said.

“The Seed” focuses on the transition into college and the different backgrounds students bring with them.

“College is this great melting pot of all of us coming together, it’s a really cool and beautiful thing for this film,” Luckett said.

“The Seed’s” director, Elijah Johnson, discussed the collision of the polar opposite protagonists.

“These characters are coming from two opposite ends of the spectrum and throughout the film, they’ll come together with a little, cheesy love story,” Johnson said. “But within that cheesy love story, they’ll help each other with the things they lack.”

Johnson talked about the personal connection he feels to one of the main characters.

“I can relate a lot to David and what he is going through because it’s what I went through when I came to college,” Johnson said. “I came to college having seen the harsh realities of life. But I came to realize that there is a place where people can consistently love each other and show kindness to each other.”

Johnson is already planning to tell the story through the use of non-verbal methods.

“This is a very character centric film, and my creative process throughout the film focuses on the characters,” Johnson said. “I want to focus on different points of view on those internal struggles and then show the conflict outwardly as the film progresses in the ways characters talk and what they wear and what is in their rooms.”

Luckett shared part of the motivation to make the film.

“I didn’t want our senior year to be one where we don’t even touch a camera, but I also wanted to do something to honor David Jurney and the legacy of the film department,” Luckett said. “I want this to be the last ‘big thing’ for the film department and something people can look back on for years to come.”

In line with the film’s theme, Luckett shared a message about the persistence of the crew.

“Even when times got hard, we didn’t give up. We wanted to make this to show the legacy of what we’ve done here on campus and the impact this campus and our professors have had on us,” Luckett said.

Luckett talked about the impact the crew would like to see.

“We want this to go to youth groups who can watch this film and not be discouraged by the reality of life,” Luckett said. “Even if you have been hit with reality like a train, to walk away knowing it gets better.”

The 30 page script, written by Abigail Balleweg, is the longest script Eagle Film has worked with. The crew is seeking a $10,000 budget, which would also be the largest sum Eagle Film has used.

The crew has been working hard over the summer to coordinate and prepare for filming this fall. They plan to film primarily on campus and hope to include members of the student body by using them as extras.

Extras are needed on Sept. 28, Sept. 29 and Oct. 8. Contact Charlie Luckett or Elijah Johnson at c.luckett@eagles.oc.edu or elijah.johnson@eagles.oc.edu for more information about being an extra.

“The Seed” is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year, with its first debut showing in January of 2024.
