Last year hundreds from the Oklahoma Christian University community gathered to hear Jase Robertson, one of the stars of A&E’s hit TV show “Duck Dynasty” speak during chapel. Now, a different Robertson is returning to campus.

Oklahoma Christian will host Missy Robertson, wife of Jase Robertson, on Oct. 7 as she speaks to over 800 women on campus at a new women’s program associated with the OC Lectureship called She Speaks.

Robertson’s involvement in the show has made her a celebrity and a household name.

With their hit show, the Robertson family has been able to reach many different people across the United States and in different parts of the world.

First airing in March of 2012, the show gained a large following that helped their season 3 premiere to reach 8.6 million viewers.  The Robertsons have been on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.”

Robertson and her family are constantly busy, from managing a four-day filming schedule, to going on book tours, making appearances and speaking at conferences.

Kerri Cunningham, executive director of events management at Oklahoma Christian, has been an integral part of planning She Speaks with Missy Robertson and anticipates a good turnout to the event.

“We are beginning a women’s program called She Speaks,” Cunningham said. “Missy is our first speaker and we are hoping that her name recognition will create an interest that we can build on from year to year as we bring women of faith to our campus that will inspire our female students.”

Cunningham said Robertson provides an important role model for women.

“I think Missy Robertson has a message that can impact all women,” Cunningham said. “She is the daughter of Larry West. Mr. West is a well-known Church of Christ traveling evangelist involved in We Care Ministries for over 30 years.  She is now part of a large family that is impacting families around the world with the highest-rated reality show influenced by Christian values. “

The She Speaks dinner with Robertson is open to women of all ages. Oklahoma Christian reserved tickets for female students to encourage students to attend. Many individuals are excited and interested about the idea of such an influential person coming to speak.

“I am super excited about listening to Missy Robertson,” sophomore Karly Monday said. “I was one of the first to purchase tickets because I was that excited. I think it is a great opportunity to be able to learn and glean information from someone who is such an outstanding Christian role model as Missy Robertson.”

One popular aspect of Robertson is her approachability.

“Missy is a mother of three and a wife dealing with fame that most of us will never understand,” Cunningham said. “Her Christian values and ethics have not changed even with all the fame that her family is getting because of the TV show.”

Cunningham anticipates this first She Speaks event to set the bar for other She Speaks speakers.

“I want women on campus to hear women with deep and impactful faith stories through our She Speaks series,” Cunningham said. “All will be different, but all will be stories that we can relate to and be encouraged by.  Missy will be the first of many to come that will inspire women of all ages in their daily walk.”

She Speaks will be an annual event to equip women to search and find God and to further their walk with him.

Junior Charina Sullins expressed anticipation for the event.

“I hope to gain some insight on how to keep my faith and relationship with God a priority amongst such a crazy and busy schedule and everything that life throws my way,” Sullins said.

Cunningham urges students to attend, and promises this will be an event not to miss.

“Over 800 women are going to gather in the Payne Athletic Center to hear Missy Robertson, enjoy good food and fellowship with friends on Monday, Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m.,” Cunningham said.  “Our prayer is that we will continue She Speaks opportunities from year to year, inspiring Oklahoma Christian woman to live faithful lives as we seek to be Jesus loud on this campus.”
