The last jazz band ensemble of the semester will occur on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Dr. John Fletcher, director of the jazz band this semester, said he hopes everyone will make an effort to attend.
“I hope everyone will take the opportunity to hear some live music on campus for free,” Fletcher said.“The program should last an hour or less and will feature outstanding student and professional performers.”
Fletcher said the concert will feature a guest singer as well as a variety of jazz pieces.
“This is a group of 19 students; I’m directing the group for this semester. We’ll feature a variety of styles with the group,” Fletcher said. “We’re featuring vocalist Chanda Graham on two pieces. Ms. Graham is a powerhouse vocalist and we’re thrilled to have her performing with us.”
By putting on events like the jazz concert, the Oklahoma Christian University music department brings new enjoyment to a genre considered by some a relic of the past.
Senior Cameron Cox said being in the jazz band has offered him new opportunities and brought him joy.
“I enjoy jazz more than any other type of music. There’s so much more energy, and oftentimes, it’s the best part of band concerts,” Cox said. “I also have the opportunity to play with different types of people and travel.”
Cox said the jazz band includes different perspectives, which has contributed to its overall unique sound.
“People change. New people join, and they bring their own experiences to the band,” Cox said. “ Every year the band sounds different.”
Cox said jazz is also important for learning how to rely on others in a group setting.
“For the players, jazz band requires focus because there’s no one else who plays your part,” Cox said. “Everyone else in the band relies on each other to learn, grow and pay attention to the little details.”
Freshman Julian Moore said his favorite aspect of the band is performing on stage.
“My favorite moments in the band so far was playing onstage for our concerts, since it’s such an exhilarating experience,” Moore said.
Moore said he is looking forward to the new experiences offered with traveling.
“I am very excited to travel the world and play outside the country with our director,” Moore said. “Last year, he took two students on an amazing trip, and I can’t wait to go either my junior or senior year.”
Moore said he is looking forward to seeing growth within himself and others while participating in the jazz band.
“I’m looking forward to seeing growth. Not only in myself, but in other members of the jazz and symphonic bands as a whole,” Moore said. “I’m excited to see the program expand and more people get involved due to their love for music.”
The jazz ensemble will play in Judd Theatre on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. Performances will feature the genres of Latin, Swing and Rock styles and guest singer Chanda Graham. Admission is free.
