Quick questions with Mikaea Weaver

This week, the Talon staff sat down with Oklahoma Christian University’s Homecoming Club Coordinator Mikaea Weaver to discuss this year’s homecoming theme and activities.

Q. What does your job as homecoming club coordinator entail?

“I’m the person who the club directors go to if they have any questions. I handle any conflicts the clubs have and I am the communications part of getting the information from the executive directors to the clubs.”

Q. Why do you think the addition of your position was necessary?

“It definitely makes the lives of our executive directors a lot easier. We had a couple of problems last year with some clubs and it was really stressful for everyone involved, so they added my position to help with those kinds of issues.”

Q. What is the significance of the “Oklahomecoming” theme?

“It’s based on Oklahoma’s heritage and for the clubs, it’s their histories within Oklahoma Christian. For all of Oklahoma Christian, it’s our history with Oklahoma as a whole.”

Q. What can the student body expect during homecoming week this year?

“There’s a lot of fun stuff and a lot of individual events going on versus last year it was a lot of club-oriented stuff. Instead of just being with your club the whole time, you can get a group of friends together and go to some of the events we have during the week.”

Q. What homecoming rule changes should clubs and club members be aware of this year?

“Our point system is different this year. In the past years, we’ve had a lot of spirit points and our games were worth points. This year it’s all going to be attendance based and so it’s supposed to be more laid back for the clubs so people aren’t crazy over points the whole time and stressed out the whole week. It’s so people can actually enjoy homecoming.”

Q. Do you believe the new changes will promote greater student involvement?

“I think it will. I think this way we’re getting everyone else and the clubs involved versus only the clubs. In past years, homecoming has been specifically club-oriented, and this year we’re trying to get it to the whole campus because we have a lot more people on campus who are not in a club.”

Q. How are clubs getting involved in the philanthropy committee?

“This year we’re doing Outreach, which is our oldest organization on campus. On Wednesday night next week, we’re doing cards. It’s an Ethos-approved event and these cards will be sent to missionaries around the world who we support at Oklahoma Christian.”

Q. Why did the executives decide to allow the freshmen to have “freshman alumni” walk with them in the parade?

“That was the freshmen’s idea. They suggested it and we approved it because that gets people who aren’t involved in a club involved in the parade, too.”

Q. In addition to walking with the freshmen in the parade, how can people not in a club participate in homecoming activities?

“We have the games that are group based, the scavenger hunt around the OKC area and Brew’s Clues next Tuesday, which is like a murder mystery.”

Q. What words of encouragement do you have for a student who’s nervous to get involved in homecoming?

“I would definitely say get out there. You’re going to meet a lot of new people. It is scary to get out of your comfort zone, but we have so many events going on for individuals to get involved. You get a group of friends together or people in your major so you can get to know each other better. It’s going to be a fun week and really laid back.”
