“Vienna Alumni Adventure” will give alumni chance to travel abroad this summer

To provide an opportunity for alumni to explore the city of Vienna, Austria, the Oklahoma Christian University alumni organization will host another Vienna Alumni trip this summer.

Alumni will have the opportunity to explore the cities of Vienna and Salzburg on a weeklong “Vienna Alumni Adventure,” which is the third of its kind. According to the advertisements about the trip, “surrounded by flawless gardens, towering cathedrals and rich, imperial culture, it guarantees an experience not soon to be forgotten.”

Executive Director of Alumni Relations Bob Lashley, who has attended both of the previous Alumni Trips, said the experience is focused on getting to know all ages of Oklahoma Christian alumni and meeting people one may not have gotten the chance to while attending college.

“We’ve had anyone from a 7-year-old to a 75-year-old on one trip,” Lashley said. “On the two trips I did go on, there were about 30 people and I only knew a handful on each one, so I’d say that’s my favorite thing.”

According to the itinerary, half of each day is a scheduled, but is optional for the group. The rest of the days include free time to do whatever they choose. Free time activities from previous years have included going into sewers to see where war movies were filmed, riding bikes around the city and touring opera houses and cathedrals.

“It’s kind of funny, but going down into the sewers was one of the most memorable parts of the trip for me,” Administrative Coordinator for Physical Plant and an Oklahoma Christian alumna Allison Hewitt said. “I wasn’t sure that I liked that, but there was an old movie that had been filmed down there so it was kind of weird, but also really cool.”

Daily scheduled outings from previous trips included visiting popular Vienna attractions, such as the Ringstrasse, Schronbrunn palace and gardens, St. Stephens Cathedral and the Klimt collection at the Belvedere Palace.

“The alumni trip is a great way to get to know other times at OC, and it’s nice not to get stuck in with people your own age all the time,” Hewitt said. “It’s a good experience for travel, for everyone to go see how other people and other Christians live in another country.”

Alumni Ken and Lindy Adams, Kim and David Reiter, and Chris and Jennifer Adair will host the trip, which will take place from April 28 to May 5. The deadline to register is Feb. 1.
