Despite a 1-0 loss, the Lady Eagles soccer team proved to be a worthy contender against top-conference-ranked Dallas Baptist University.

After a long battle between the two teams, Oklahoma Christian University lost during overtime. Both teams grew sloppy and desperate as they tried to find a window of opportunity to shoot a goal.

Freshman Rubi Villegas Aguilar said she is optimistic and satisfied with the team’s effort against Dallas Baptist.

“I think we played really, really well,” Aguilar said. “They are the best team in our conference and we were really close, but one mistake and that’s all.”

The Lady Eagles made their sole mistake during the 96th minute when the Patriots’ Emilie MacDonald kicked in the ball past goalkeeper Carina Schanz from 15 yards and ended the game.

Schanz recorded five saves during the Patriots’ 21 shots at the goal.

According to Aguilar, the Lady Eagles played better against the Patriots on Saturday in comparison to Thursday’s 3-0 loss to St. Edward’s University.

Oklahoma Christian has struggled to keep up with both Dallas Baptist and St. Edward’s, who are top-ranked teams in the Heartland Conference. The struggle was less apparent in Saturday’s game as the winning goal was not made until overtime.

Aguilar said the Lady Eagles’ eight total shots, compared to the Patriots’ 21 shots, require attention in future team practices.

“I think we have to practice shooting more on the goal, but we are getting better,” Aguilar said. “I am so proud of my team.”

Oklahoma Christian will play the University of Texas of the Permian Basin on Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
