The Eagles baseball team defeated Oklahoma City University for the third time this season, sealing a 7-6 win at home.

Oklahoma Christian University held back the Stars on Tuesday for much of the start but then ran into trouble as Oklahoma City University crept up until they were one point behind.

Head Coach Lonny Cobble said the team is working its way through the season game by game and he’s happy with their performance.

“I thought it went really well, especially since we won,” Cobble said. “We made some mistakes on the field but we’re getting there.”

In the first inning, Ben McKenzie hit a single to send Zac Cobble home for the game’s first run.

In the second inning, Chase Kuwitzky knocked a double to left field so Cody Rosecrans could score. Cobble hit a single for Kuwitzky to record a run, followed by Derek Jones sending Cobble home to help the Eagles lead the game 4-0.

The Stars scored their first two runs in the third inning then neither team scored until the Eagles’ Jones made it home in the bottom of the fifth. The Stars retaliated with another two runs in the sixth by Reggie Wilson and Jared Backer to trail 5-4. The game was quiet until Kolton Brown’s single sent Jackson Matthews and McKenzie home, sending the Eagles up 7-4.

The Stars scored the final two runs of the night in the top of the eighth inning, while the teams went back and forth with good plays and stolen bases through the bottom of the ninth inning. The hosting Eagles took the victory, 7-6.

In the past, Lonny Cobble said the Stars have given Oklahoma Christian a run for its money.

“Those guys are really good, they have owned Oklahoma for the last century,” Cobble said.

Recently, the Eagles are succeeding in pushing past the rival and gaining the confidence Lonny Cobble thinks comes with camaraderie.

“I think our guys expect to win now and I don’t know if they ever did before,” Cobble said. “I think it’s a combination of a lot of things, the caliber of the guys we bring in, they’re good kids and they work hard. I wouldn’t say you could pin it on one thing.”

During the upcoming weekend, the Eagles will take on the University of Texas-Permian Basin in a 3-game series. The Eagles have a doubleheader on April 3  followed by a single game on April 4.
