Ben Hutchinson, a former Oklahoma Christian University faculty member, passed away on Dec. 30, 2014.

From 1998 until 2004, Hutchinson served as dean of the College of Science and Engineering. After leaving Oklahoma Christian in 2004, Hutchinson began working for Lipscomb University as the Dean of the College of Natural and Applied Sciences, and he eventually became a faculty member in the Chemistry and Biochemistry departments.

Under Hutchinson’s lead, Oklahoma Christian began their computer-engineering program and opened an advanced anatomy lab. Hutchinson also assisted in making overseas medical missions a larger commitment as well as a bigger opportunity for Oklahoma Christian’s students.

Hutchinson is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughter Amy and son-in-law Steven McBride and three grandchildren, Bennett, Elizabeth and John Carter. Nancy was a faculty member at Oklahoma Christian, teaching in the English department.

Besides his academic achievements, Hutchinson left an impact on other faculty members.

“Ben and Nancy Hutchinson contributed powerful professional portfolios of skills to OC students and made an impact on all of us through their faith in Christ,” Vice President of Academic Affairs Scott LaMascus said. “For example, while he was Dean, Ben and Nancy were very active in the faculty book club and hosted the group in their home where I first got acquainted with them better.”

LaMascus said Hutchinson engaged students and faculty alike.

“They also encouraged many students and faculty in endeavors for faith, scholarship, and service, often reaching and engaging individuals who were not otherwise deeply engaged,” LaMascus said.

While Hutchinson worked at Lipscomb, he and Jeff McCormack became acquainted. McCormack recently left Lipscomb to join Oklahoma Christian’s faculty as dean of College of Natural and Health Sciences.

“I thought a lot of Ben,” McCormack said. “He was a hard worker and did so much for many science programs. He will definitely be missed.”
