Oklahoma City Girl Scout breaks cookie selling record

Many people are familiar with Girl Scout cookies, and may even have a particular favorite; some families traditionally purchase several boxes of cookies.

“I think [each Girl Scout] could probably sell 300 boxes of Girl Scout cookies,” freshman Zachary Roden said. “[It] seems like most of that would come from Thin Mints.”

The average number of boxes sold per Girl Scout is between 100 and 280.

Support Central Customer Support Supervisor Lisa Herndon, whose daughter is a Girl Scout, confirmed Roden’s guess.

“[My daughter’s] goal this year was 250 boxes, and she sold about that much,” Herndon said. “Not quite the record, but it was good for our family.”

Shooting past the average, Katie Francis, a Girl Scout from Oklahoma City, sold 18,107 boxes of Girl Scout cookies.

Upon hearing this record, sophomore Natalie Jones, who often buys Girl Scout cookies, tried to guess how one would sell so many boxes.

“She must have at least sent them to work with mom and dad,” Jones said. “She must have gone to everybody in her town or something like that.”

Sophomore Taylor Legg, as a former Girl Scout, also tried to figure out how this feat could be accomplished.

“In order to sell 18,000 boxes, you would have to be very determined,” Legg said. “I think it would take a fair amount of time, and you would most likely need help. You’d also want to target certain places that get a lot of business, such as banks and stores, and colleges would probably be pretty good too; what college student doesn’t want cookies?”

Herndon explained the different methods the Girl Scouts can use to sell the cookies.

“The girls can sell cookies by themselves,” Herndon said. “They can go door-to-door or to friends and their parents friends. They can do booth sales as well, so they can sign up for times to sell at stores like Walmart or Home Depot or something like that. The girls also have the option of online cookie sales, and so they can email their friends through social media and try to sell cookies that way as well.”

Despite these multiple opportunities to sell cookies, Herndon related from her own experience to prove that selling 18,000 cookies is an amazing feat.

“We came up to OC to sell cookies during Spring Sing,” Herndon said. “…We came up and spent about two hours. We sold about 50 boxes, and we felt like we had done really well. That took us two hours, so to sell 18,000 boxes, I can’t imagine how much time that took.”
