The third time proved to be the charm for the Oklahoma Christian University women’s basketball team, recovering from two losses earlier in the week to record a win on Saturday.

After falling to the University of Central Oklahoma and Texas Wesleyan University earlier in the week, the Lady Eagles rallied together from start to finish against Division I school University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma for a 94-48 win.

The highlight of the game was the defensive coordination the Lady Eagles displayed, junior forward Emma Gade said it was thanks to a group effort.

“As a team we played really hard,” Gade said. “We bounced back and fought for a good team win. Everyone was contributing and we got the job done.”

Senior guard Kaitlyn Morris said she was proud of the way the team stepped up for a team win.

“We did dominate on the boards today and that comes from the hard defense and effort everybody put out today,” Morris said. “Our biggest challenge was to not get lazy on our defense and to stop the easy penetration.”

Forward McKenzie Stanford led the team’s drive to the basket with 16 points, three assists, three steals and seven rebounds in her 28 minutes of playing time.

Guard Logan McKee contributed 12 points, four of the team’s 20 steals and five of the team’s 20 assists.

Gade added 10 points to the books, going 4-for-4 from behind the charity strike, while forwards Skylar Newberry and Aisha Martin each picked up three steals from the Drovers’ 30 turnovers.

The team collectively held back USAO’s shooting. At halftime the scoreboard showed the Lady Eagles’ 39 points leading the Drovers’ 23. In the second half the Lady Eagles shot 58.6 percent to add another 55 points while the Drovers fell to 32.3 percent accuracy, adding 25 points.

According to Women’s Basketball Head Coach Stephanie Findley, an unselfish offense helped the team Saturday.

“I was proud of our teamwork and our effort on defense,” Findley said. “We shared the ball by making the extra pass and it paid off in a high number of assists and balanced scoring.”

Next up for the Lady Eagles is a game against Washburn University at home on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
