The bowling intramural will soon take a new spin as Oklahoma Christian University will team up with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma in a fundraising tournament for the organization.
“Our plan is to try to have 20 teams to fill up the whole bowling ally and each club can have more then one team,” Intramural Director Rick Judd said. “There will be a trophy for the club or team that raises the most money and then also a trophy for the highest score.”
Clubs can have multiple six-student teams, but each team must raise $625 to participate. All proceeds go towards the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
Judd said the bowling intramural previously has not been very popular, but he hopes that making this a charity event will push clubs to put forth more participation effort.
“I have done bowling tournaments in the past… and it wasn’t a huge success,” Judd said. “It’s usually just a one night event and so this is an intramural bowling tournament, but it is not for points because the basis is to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters.”
Last semester, Chad Robertson, Oklahoma Christian financial controller, brought up the idea of fundraising through a bowling competition for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“Chad Robertson has done this before and he is on the board for Big Brothers Big Sisters,” Judd said. “He brought it to me to see if it is something we could do. He said that [it is something] UCO has done and also a lot of other businesses have done it.”
There are spots for 20 teams that need to be filled by social clubs. However, students not in social clubs are welcome to participate as well.
“If we don’t get the 20 teams from the students, we will probably branch out and see if faculty would like to do it as well,” Judd said. “We do want to start out with clubs though.”
Junior Kendall Bosse said she is going to participate in the event while representing her club, Theta Theta Theta.
“I was on the bowling team in high school,” Bosse said. “So hopefully that puts us at somewhat of an advantage against the other teams.”
Theta is not the only club pledging to participate, Cody Smith, the Chi Lamba Phi athletic director, said his club has decided to put in the effort as well.
“I think Chi will be really involved,” Smith said. “Typically, after we find out more information we like to really go for it. It was kind of nerve racking at first, but once they really talked about how to do it … the idea became a little less scary and it became more like, ‘okay we can do this, we can raise $625.’”
Smith said all the athletic directors are interested to see how this event will be different from the way it has been done in the past.
“I think it will be fun,” Smith said. “And it will be interesting how many teams each club puts out there, and it will be good to just have some fun without thinking about club points.”
Judd said he believes the fundraising could be a struggle, and the first time will be a learning experience.
