Club Night kicks off month of rush events

Sophomores gathered in Hardeman Auditorium on Tuesday to hear social service club presidents give a speeches in an attempt to win new members.

Club night kicks off rush month, when students will have the chance to sample the nine clubs through the events they host.

Alpha Gamma Omega, Chi Lambda Phi, Gamma Rho, Iota Kappa Phi, Kappa Sigma Tau, Phi Omega Nu, Pi Zeta Phi, Psi Epsilon and Theta Theta Theta set up booths in the conservatory, complete with food, goodies and sign-ups for the rushees.

“[Club night] is really fun,” William Cooke, rush director for Kappa Sigma Tau said. “This year, we are trying to keep Kappa the same Kappa.”

In an effort to attract more members, Club night is the chance for clubs to leave a lasting impression. Clubs expand on those impressions by preparing social events that all rushees are invited to.

One of Kappa’s events is the annual Float Trip.

“Every year, in the middle of the rush, we will go to Tulsa and float the river,” Cooke said.

This year, there are some changes to the clubs. For Alpha, this is its 14th anniversary. For Gamma, it’s the year of the red.

A new women’s club joined the group this year: Phi Omega Nu.

“Our great friend Kennedy McAlister started this new club,” Andrea Ochoa, the rush director of Phi Omega Nu, said. “She is going to be our president.”

Ochoa is the co-rush director with Tianna Allen.

“We want to offer another place for people to fit in,” Allen said. “Before our club, there were only four [girl’s] clubs.”

Allen said the club already has goals mapped out and projects and events planned.

“Our biggest goal for our club is service projects,” Allen said. “We want to put more focus on service than any other clubs. We are going to have cookout and devotional with Chi. We are also going to do a service project with the local fire station.”

The club members said they were excited about future club events.

“The tea party will be my favorite,” Ochoa said. “It is our final event, and I am really excited about this one.”

New member rush ends Oct. 2 with bid day, when each club accepts new members and then new member induction occurs that evening.
