Wings, a special needs community, is hosting a benefit concert featuring John Fullbright on Sept. 25.
Wings works with special needs people, 18 years or older, in order to help prepare them for jobs and life as adults. According to Wayne Pittard, executive director for Wings, the community helps develop vocational, residential and social skills.
“The purpose of this concert is to raise awareness for special needs,” Pittard said. “We have many different things that we are doing to support [Wings] mission and vision.”
Wings is a faith-based nonprofit organization. The benefit concert will help raise money for the organization as they rely on donors and fundraisers for its income.
Fullbright is a Grammy nominated singer/songwriter from Okemah, Oklahoma.
Like their mission states, Wings is trying to enhance the lives of adults with developmental disabilities through social programs. These are all guided by biblical principles.
According to Pittard, Wings has several events like the benefit concert to grab attention for special needs people. They also have students as volunteers to help them set up events.
“The students attend Monday to Thursday and participate in fun events such as arts and field trips, as well as educational things, like nature walks, laundry, gardening and cooking,” Kindra Anderson, Oklahoma Christian University senior, said.
The benefit concert is not the only fundraising event for Wings.
“One of Wings biggest fundraising events is the pumpkin patch.” Anderson said. “I volunteered to help at it last year and had a great time. There are hundreds of pumpkins, hay rides, and the students help with everything.”
This benefit concert is open to everyone.
“It is going to be kind of mixed,” Pittard said. “Everyone is welcomed.”
The concert is at Wings, located near campus by TealRidge. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 per person. For more information, contact WINGS at (405) 242-4646.
