A new Oklahoma Christian University Bible study and support group was formed in September to fight back against the spread of pornography in Christian culture.

Dylan Schouppe, a senior public relations major, is the founder and facilitator for OC Conquerors.

“We provide a safe and open environment for Christian men to speak openly about a very raw and difficult topic,” Schouppe said. “We address what, in my opinion, the Church fails to.”

The idea for this group was conceived in early April and Schouppe started planning and making arrangements.

The Conquerors exists specifically to talk openly about pornography addiction, the struggle of living in a purified culture, and how Christian men can spread awareness about the harmful effects of porn.

“Porn isn’t just a problem for Christians. Porn literally messes with the brain,” Schouppe said. “More psychologists and anti-porn advocates are seeing the harmful effects of the use of porn and are referring to it as a public health crisis. We want to spread this knowledge and speak truth into such a difficult struggle.”

Schouppe said he encourages people to join and intentionally set aside time every week to speak about this issue.

“I encourage anyone struggling to talk about it,” Schouppe said. “To pray about it regularly, and take intentional steps to rise above the struggle.”

Sheldon Adkins, counselor for Oklahoma Christian University, has spoken at OC Conquerors and is involved in the group.

“I would encourage anyone who struggles with pornography and lust to attend this Bible study,” Adkins said. “The accountability, honesty, and most importantly learning to rely on God’s power instead of our own makes it possible for every person to have freedom from addiction.”

Schouppe said that although pornography can be a struggle, God can help conquer the addiction.

“Porn usage is higher among Christian males than secular males because Christians think that it is a safe or healthy alternative to pre-marital or extramarital sex,” Schouppe said. “It’s not. It’s damaging. It’s burdening. But our God is bigger. … We can conquer this.”

The group’s theme verse come from Romans 8:37, which says “… For we are more than conqueror’s through him who loves us.”

The group meets Mondays at 7 p.m. on the second floor of the Mabee Learning Center.
